Jean-Christophe Clair

Countertenor

After studying at the Dijon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, and Paris Conservatoires and spending four years with the Opéra Eclaté opera troop under the direction of Olivier Desbordes, Jean-Christophe Clair turned towards ancient music.  A student of Jean Tubéry, Michel Laplénie, and Agnès Melon at the Paris Conservatoire National de Region, he also followed a formation in Gregorian chant at the Centre de Musique Médiévale in Paris with Brigitte Lesne.

Since then, he has worked regularly with the following ensembles: Sagittarius, directed by Michel Laplénie, L’Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing, dir. Jean-Claude Malgoire, Le Madrigal de Bordeaux, dir. Eliane Lavail, L’Ensemble Clément Janequin, dir. Dominique Visse, Le Concert d’Astrée, dir. Emmanuelle Haïm, La Simphonie du Marais, dir. Hugo Reyne, Arsys Bourgogne, dir. Pierre Cao, Akadémia, dir. Françoise Lasserre, La Fenice, dir. Jean Tubéry, and Ludus Modalis, dir. Bruno Boterf.

In addition to his musical activities, Jean-Christophe Clair has explored other dimensions of art which are dear to him: directing Gregorian choirs (Chœur Saint Sernin in Toulouse, Chœur Saint Charles in Marseille); painting frescoes in different churches (Bordeaux, Marseille, Jerusalem); creating and realizing costumes and producing various shows in collaboration with Olivier-Thomas Venard and Françoise Masset (“Le Mystère de Saint Etienne”, Paris 1997 - “Le Livre des Justes”, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lyon, Paris, Versailles, Metz, Strasbourg, Rome 2000 - “Marie-Madeleine - la robe de pourpre”, Saint Maximin, Toulon, Marseille 2005); and the foundation of the vocal ensemble Voix Dominicaines, composed chiefly of around fifteen Dominican friars under the direction of Eliane Lavail (concert tour in Southeastern France, 2002-2006).

Finally, due to his great interest for the repertoire for two voices and organ, he created with soprano Françoise Masset and organist Pascal Marsault the Triptyca ensemble, with which he currently gives the program Les Angélus, un siècle de musique sacrée française 1850-1950, de Camille Saint-Saëns à Jehan Alain”.
