The Grand Air Trio, created in New York City in 2006 and now based in Amsterdam, borrows its name from the French expression “au grand air”: being outdoors, in wide open natural spaces. This depicts the Trio’s quest for new horizons on the form and substance of the classical chamber music genre.

The group can alter its own geometry, for instance, by using all possible combinations of the three instruments, and also aims at widening the range of its repertoire (from classical to contemporary, including other styles). This allows for richer and more exciting concert programs that ultimately could reach larger audiences.

French-Bulgarian violinist Dimiter Tchernookov is a graduate of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (with high honors), and received a Master of Music Degree and a Professional Studies Diploma with special awards from the Mannes College of Music of New York; Guillaume Grosbard completed his cello studies in his native France and at the Rotterdam Conservatorium, where he obtained his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in solo specialty; Polish-Canadian pianist Justyna Maj holds a Bachelor Degree and Artist Diploma from the Vancouver Academy of Music, and a Master of Music from the Hochschüle für Musik Stuttgart.

In its multiple configurations, the Grand Air Trio has appeared as guest artist in the USA, Canada and Europe. Since its critically acclaimed “New York Recital Debut” at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in November 2008, the trio has given numerous recitals in New York City (WMP Series, Yamaha Piano Salon, Consulate General of the Republic of Poland), in Paris (Salle Cortot, Hôtel de Soubise, Grand Salon des Invalides), in Amsterdam (de Krijtberg, Salon Erard) and has been invited to prestigious international festivals such as La Roque-d’Antheron, Fontainebleau American Conservatory, Festival Cordes et Pics, Casalmaggiore International Festival, and Festival de Dinard.

Upcoming engagements include performances at the Festival Classique au Large in Saint-Malo, and a tour in western France (Nantes, La Roche-sur-Yon, Saint-Maixent) in February 2013.

The ensemble has had the opportunity to work in numerous master classes with renowned artists such as the Wanderer Trio, Christian Ivaldi, Gordan Nikolic, Anner Bylsma, Emmanuel Strosser, Heinz Oberdorfer, Richard Wolfe, Herre Jan Stegenga, Claire Desert, Lucie Robert, Roger Chase, Jeffrey Cohen, and the Penderecki String Quartet.
